Duties of Authors

REPORTING STANDARDS

Authors should present reliable and accurate scientific work and discuss its significance. Data should be reported accurately in the paper. A paper should be accompanied by sufficient detail and relevant references. Fraudulent or inaccurate statements that constitute unethical behavior are unacceptable.

DATA ACCESS AND STORAGE

The Leather, Footwear and Leather Products Technology Research Periodical may request authors to provide the raw data in connection with a paper for editor review, for public access, or for storage purposes.

ORIGINALITY AND PLAGIARISM

Authors should ensure that they use the work of others appropriately. Any form of plagiarism, from claiming another person's work as their own, to copying or summarizing substantial portions of another person's work (without attribution), to claiming research results performed by others, constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

MULTIPLE, REDUNDANT, OR CONSECUTIVE PUBLICATION

In principle, an author should not publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication concurrently. This constitutes unethical publishing behavior and is unacceptable.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF SOURCES

Authors should properly acknowledge the work of others. Authors should cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work. Information obtained privately, as in conversation, correspondence, or discussion with third parties, must not be used or reported without the express written permission of the source. Information obtained in the course of confidential services, such as manuscript review or grant applications, must not be used without the express written permission of the author of the work engaged in these services.

AUTHORITY OF THE ARTICLE

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the paper. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Others should be properly acknowledged. The responsible author must ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the paper and have agreed to its publication.

HUMAN OR ANIMAL SUBJECTS

If research involves the use of animal or human subjects, the author must ensure that the manuscript contains a statement that all procedures were performed in accordance with applicable laws and institutional guidelines, and that the appropriate institutional committees have approved them. Authors should include a statement in the manuscript that informed consent was obtained for experiments with human subjects. The privacy rights of human subjects must always be respected.

GLOBAL DISCLOSURE AND CONFLICTS OF EXPERTISE

All authors must disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantial conflict of interest that might be likely to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed. Examples of potential conflicts of interest that should be disclosed include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other sources of funding. Potential conflicts of interest should be disclosed at the outset.

FUNDAMENTAL ERRORS IN PUBLISHED WORKS

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal editor or publisher and cooperate with the editor to retract or correct the paper. If the editor or publisher comes to the attention of third parties that a published work contains a significant error, it is the author’s obligation to promptly retract or correct the paper or provide evidence to the editor of the correctness of the original paper.

Duties of Editors

PUBLICATION DECISIONS

The editor of a peer-reviewed journal is responsible for deciding which of the articles submitted to the journal should be published, often in collaboration with the journal’s association or society. The validation of the work under review and its importance to researchers and readers must always be considered in making such decisions. Editors may be guided by the policies of the journal’s editorial board and constrained by such legal requirements as shall then be in force regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The editor may consult with other editors or reviewers (or society officers) in making this decision.

FAIRNESS

An editor should evaluate manuscripts objectively for their intellectual content without regard to race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors.

CONFIDENTIALITY

The editor and any editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the corresponding author, reviewers, other potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and, as appropriate, the publisher.

DISCLOSURE AND CONFLICTS OF EXPERTISE

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in an editor's personal research without the express written consent of the author. Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Editors should recuse themselves (i.e., ask a co-editor, corresponding editor, or other member of the editorial board) from reviewing a manuscript if they have a conflict of interest resulting from competitive, collaborative, or other relationships or connections with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers. The editor should require all authors to disclose any relevant competing interests and should publish a correction if any competing interest becomes apparent after publication. If necessary, other appropriate action should be taken, such as issuing a retraction letter or statement of concerns. Ensure that the peer review process for sponsored supplements is the same as that used for the main journal. Non-peer-reviewed parts of the journal should be clearly identified as such.

ENGAGEMENT AND COOPERATION IN INVESTIGATIONS

An editor should take reasonable responsive steps when an ethical complaint has been made regarding a submitted or published manuscript, in collaboration with the publisher (or society). These steps will usually include contacting the author or publisher and giving appropriate consideration to the complaint or claim, but may also involve further communication with the relevant institutions and research institutions. If a complaint affects the work or decisions under review, the editor should ensure that the complaint or claim is examined objectively and that any errors are resolved appropriately (e.g., through the publication of a correction, retraction, or explanation). The editor should inform the publisher (or society) of the complaint and provide them with all information necessary for its appropriate handling.

PLAGIARISM POLICY

Periodic Research on Leather, Footwear and Leather Products Technology states that plagiarism is unacceptable for all authors and therefore establishes the following policy stating specific actions (sanctions) when plagiarism is identified by plagiarism checking software in an article submitted for publication. We use Turnitin as the plagiarism checking software.

“Plagiarism is copying another person’s text or ideas and passing off the copied material as your own work. You must distinguish (i.e., separate and identify) the copied text from your own text and give credit (i.e., cite the source) to the source of the copied text to avoid accusations of plagiarism. Plagiarism is considered fraud and can result in serious consequences including loss of employment, loss of reputation, and reduced or failing grades in courses."

This definition of plagiarism applies to copied text and ideas:

Regardless of the source of the copied text or idea.

Regardless of whether the author of the text or idea you copied actually copied the text or idea from another source.

Regardless of whether the author of the text or idea you copied is known or unknown.

Regardless of the nature of your text (journal/article, web page, book chapter, paper submitted for a college course, etc.) from which you copied the text or idea.

Regardless of whether the author of the source of the copied material gave permission to copy the material; and

Regardless of whether or not you are the author of the source of the copied text or idea (self-plagiarism).

If plagiarism is detected through Plagiarism Checker software, the Editorial Board is responsible for reviewing the paper.
